Governor Haribhau Bagde has granted assent to the Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2025, making it officially in force.
Key Provisions:
• Aims to prevent unlawful religious conversions through marriage, coercion, deception, or inducement.
• Priests/clerics must inform the district administration 2 months in advance before officiating any inter-religious marriage.
• Individuals intending to convert must notify the district magistrate 90 days before conversion.
• Marriages conducted solely for conversion will be declared null and void after inquiry.
• Failure to inform can lead to 10–14 years imprisonment and ₹5 lakh fine.
• Ends the practice of “chat mangni-pat byaah” (prompt interfaith weddings).
• Assets used for unlawful conversions can be seized by the government.
Penalties
• Fraudulent conversions: 7–14 years jail + ₹5 lakh fine
• Targeting minors, women, SC/ST, disabled: 10–20 years jail + ₹10 lakh fine
• Mass conversions: 20 years jail + ₹25 lakh fine
• Foreign/illegal funding: 10–20 years jail + ₹20 lakh fine
• Threats, deceitful marriage, trafficking: 20 years jail + ₹30 lakh fine
• Repeat offenders: 20 years jail + ₹50 lakh fine
All offences are non-bailable and will be tried only in sessions court.
This is Rajasthan’s second attempt to pass such a law – the earlier version (2008, Vasundhara Raje govt) was returned by then President Pratibha Patil.
🏛️ Minister of State (Home) Jawahar Singh Bedham called it “the strictest law in the country.”
