THE PERSECUTED APOSTLES
“Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.” Acts 5:17-18
Ponder.
This scripture highlights the great influence behind persecution: jealousy. The high priest and his associates were driven by jealousy for the apostles because they were gaining popularity among the people, and their bold proclamation of the truth was like a knife cutting into their religious hypocrisy. This, however, did not stop the early church from continuing the work of the Lord. We face the same kind of opposition today from religious fanatics and others who are driven by jealousy because the light within us exposes the darkness in them, but ultimately, like the early church, we must persevere and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all, including our persecutors.
Commit.
Even in the face of jealously-motivated persecution, do we respond in love and carry out the will of the Father?
Pray.
Let us pray that the jealousy that drives our persecutors will not prosper.
against us, and that their hearts will be transformed with love for the Lord.
