Roman soldiers could order Jews to carry the soldier’s baggage of armor, which could weigh between thirty and forty kilograms. At the end of a mile, the Jew could rightfully drop it and be relieved of their burden, but Jesus encourages his disciples to continue to bear the weight for an additional mile.
Walking with the persecuted Church will bring opposition from every side. Remember that God’s way is not always the easiest path, especially when we are walking the extra mile, but it will bring us rich fulfilment like no other journey we could ever imagine. Persevere to the end with eternal perspective whenever you are required to walk the extra mile!
