NEW DELHI: The Union home ministry has restored the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registration of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity after it submitted the necessary documents to the concerned department a few days ago, said government sources on Saturday.
This means that the organisation will now be able to receive foreign fundings and also can spend the money lying in the banks.
The Missionaries of Charity is a Catholic religious congregation established in 1950 by Nobel laureate Mother Teresa to help the poor and destitute,
On December 27, the Centre had said it didn’t approve Missionaries of Charity’s FCRA renewal application “for not meeting eligibility conditions” and over certain “adverse inputs” received when it was considering the application.
Missionaries of Charity superior-general Sister M Prema issued a statement confirming that its FCRA renewal application had been refused. But there “is no freeze order by the ministry on any of our bank accounts”, she clarified. “We have asked our centres not to operate any of the foreign contribution accounts till the matter is resolved as a measure to ensure there is no lapse,” she had said.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was one of the first to protest after the news reached Kolkata.

“Shocked to hear that on Christmas, Union ministry FROZE ALL BANK ACCOUNTS of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in India! Their 22,000 patients & employees have been left without food & medicines. While the law is paramount, humanitarian efforts must not be compromised,” she had tweeted.
However, MHA denied freezing any of its bank accounts.
Nearly 6,000 organisations lost their FCRA licences on January 1, either because they failed to renew them or their applications were rejected.
