PRESS RELEASE
Assam Christian Forum Welcomes Dismissal of Case Against Pranjal Bhuyan
Guwahati, Assam | May 13, 2025
Background of the Case
Mr. Pranjal Bhuyan, 38, was arrested on November 23, 2024, under the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Act, 2024-a controversial law aimed at curbing deceptive healing practices. He was accused of engaging in so-called ‘magical healing’ with the intent to convert individuals through his private tutoring and discussions on the Bible. These baseless allegations not only caused personal distress to Mr. Bhuyan and his family but also alarmed the Christian community across Assam, marking the first instance of a church member being arrested under this Act.
Court Ruling and Legal Support
After a comprehensive review of the facts and evidence, the Golaghat District Court dismissed the case on May 13, 2025, declaring the accusations to be entirely unfounded. The Assam Christian Forum expresses deep appreciation to Advocate Johnny Baksh, a prominent advocate from Golaghat, for his
unwavering legaldefense and commitment to justice.
This judgment brings much-needed relief to Mr. Bhuyan, his loved ones, and the Golaghat Baptist Church, and stands as a testament to the judiciary’s impartiality and dedication to upholding the rule of law.
Faith in the Constitution and Judiciary
The Assam Christian Forum reaffirms its unwavering trust in the Indian Constitution, particularly Article 25, which guarantees every citizen the right to freely profess, practice, and propagate their religion. The dismissal of this case is a reminder of the judiciary’s critical role in protecting these freedoms and shielding innocent citizens from false and harmful allegations.
Call for Justice, Unity, and Responsible Governance
While celebrating the outcome, the Forum urges both authorities and citizens to ensure the just and fair application of laws. The misuse of legislation-such as in Mr. Bhuyan’s case-not only disrupts individual lives

but also poses a threat to communal harmony and social trust.
We respectfully call upon the government to establish safeguards that prevent the wrongful targeting of individuals based on their faith, and to foster an environment of mutual respect, peace, and inclusivity across all communities.
Concerns Regarding the Healing Act
The Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Act, 2024, while intended to address exploitative practices, must be implemented with care and discernment. Mr. Bhuyan’s wrongful arrest highlights the Act’s potential for misuse and the urgent need for checks and balances in its enforcement.
The Assam Christian Forum remains committed to advocating for interfaith dialogue, religious freedom, and protection against discrimination in the name of law.
Acknowledgments and Commitment
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Advocate Johnny Baksh and his team, the Golaghat Baptist Church, the Christiancommunity, and all those who stood in solidarity with Mr. Bhuyan during this trying time. We continue to prayfor peace, justice, and unity in Assam and throughout India.
The Assam Christian Forum remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the constitutional values of justice, equality, dignity, and religious freedom for all citizens.
