Targeted attack on Christian churches
The Indian Christian church is undergoing a time of unprecedented persecution. No matter where the place of worship – homes, private property, rented premises, church buildings – nothing is being spared! Religious fanatics are on a rampage hunting down Christian gatherings. Their aim is to threaten, attack and make sure the Sunday services are called off.
Pastor Deepak Kumar, after accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour, started a Sunday worship service in his private land in Dhanauri, a village in Roorkee Block in Haridwar District of Uttarakhand State of India.
Pastor Deepak runs the worship service in the name of Shalom Prarthana Bhawan (Prayer House). More than 200 villagers attend the Sunday worship service every week.
A few months ago, during the worship service, around two dozen religious fanatics barged into the worship service and forcefully stopped the meetings. They threatened and forced the believers to leave the worship service.
Pastor Deepak was taken to Piran Kaliyar Police Station and the religious fanatics accused him of conversion and produced a person in front of the police officers and made him say that Pastor Deepak offered Rs 3 lakhs (Rs 300,000) for converting to Christianity. Later Pastor Deepak was released without any charges.
Pastor Deepak boldly continued worshiping the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ at the same premises.
On 21st January, 2019, Pastor Deepak received a notice from District Magistrate asking him to appear in court on 15th February, 2019. The notice stated that a complaint against him and his father, Vijaypal had been lodged by Dharamveer Saini and he had been booked under IPC Sections 107,116.
Pastor Deepak called Persecution Relief and informed us about the problem he was facing. He was very distressed and he said ‘What is my fault that I am being harassed and treated like this? I am only making an effort to transform the lives of my brothers and sisters who live in my village by sharing the love of Jesus.’
Priests, Nuns, Pastors, Evangelists are facing similar situations in many parts of India.
False complaints are lodged on a daily basis, police blindly succumb to the pressure of religious fanatic groups and they just file an FIR (First Information Report) without investigating the facts and realities.
Religious leaders are taken to the Police stations during Sunday worship services and they are humiliated by the fanatics and often the police are mute spectators.
Persecution Relief has recorded more than 477 persecution incidents in 2018, across the 29 states of India. The doors of a multitude of Churches have been sealed and scores arrested on false charges of indulging in conversion activities.
In 2019 we have already recorded more than 110 hate crime cases against Christians.
Church, rise up and pray that people like Pastor Deepak and others stand faithfully till the end proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ across India!
