“Schedule Caste” Christians targeted, Tamil Nadu
An Advocate at the High Court in Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu, has made a representation to the Collector, asking him to initiate a probe into an anomalous situation where Schedule Caste (SC) Hindus who have converted to Christianity, are enjoying the benefits of SC Quota, covertly, by retaining their Hindu names.
Advocate, Nagarathinam, B.A. BL., Secretary to Schedule Caste Wing, belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), holding post of Secretary for Scheduled Caste Wing, has petitioned the Collector of the District, to terminate from its Government rolls, all Schedule Caste people who have Hindu names but are practicing Christianity and “true Hindus” be reinstated in such jobs.
The Advocate claimed that several Scheduled Caste Hindus, secured employment on the basis of Caste quota. However, over time, these SC Hindus converted to Christianity from Hinduism, and still enjoying the benefits of reservation. He added that they retain their original Hindu names, but are practicing Christians.
The Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are officially designated groups of historically disadvantaged people in India. In modern literature, the Scheduled Castes are sometimes referred to as untouchables. Since the independence of India, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were given Reservation status, guaranteeing political representation. The system of reservation in India consists of a series of measures, such as reserving access to seats in the various legislatures, to government jobs, and to enrollment in higher educational institutions. Currently, a person of Schedule Caste is allowed benefits on conversion to Sikhism/ Buddhism ONLY because these religious are of Indian origin, and not allowed benefits on conversion to Christianity / Islam because they are assumed of foreign origin.
Both Christianity and Islam are caste-less, as Buddhism and Sikhism are equally caste-less.
