Prayer meeting disrupted, Church members attacked, Karnataka

Bro.  Arjun S Hattimatter, the younger brother of Bro. Samuel and 8 other believers, were severely assaulted in a brutal attack by 12-15 religious fanatics, at Belavanki Colony, Hubli, Karnataka.

As Bro. Raja of The Pentecostal Mission [TPM] Church, was out of Station, the meeting was held at Bro. Peter’s house.

On the 01st of November, 2018, Bro. Samuel was leading the prayer meeting when religious fanatics trespassed into the private residence and attacked the Christians present. About 50 people were in attendance during the prayer meeting, which commenced at 6. 00 pm.

Bro. Samuel had just finished conducting the prayer meeting when the incident took place. A loud commotion of angry and raised voices was heard. Then all of a sudden, the fanatics barged into the house carrying wooden lathis, started to abuse the Christians using the filthiest of language. They started beating the Christians present, specially targeting Bro. Samuel, mercilessly beating the women and children too.

The fanatics accused the Christians of indulging in conversion activities. Each of them wore a finger ring which appeared to have a stencil to imprint. They used this ring to cut into the bodies of people.

Bro. Arjun, the younger brother of Bro. Samuel who was leading the meeting, was viciously hit on his head and profusely bleeding.

Somebody informed the police who reached the home, ‘not to rescue the Christians but to arrest the victims instead. The Christians were taken to Indi Pump Police Station and later taken to the Hospital for treatment. A little after midnight, after registering their complaint, they were released.

Speaking to Persecution Relief, Bro. Arjun said that he and his family had committed their lives to follow Jesus Christ around 20 years ago. Under no circumstances, was he going to recant his faith; instead, he remarked that he was privileged and chosen to endure this persecution, for the name of Jesus Christ.

Bro. Isaac, a member of the Church added that the fanatics had been targeting and harassing them for several months now.

It is rumored that several Churches in the area were allegedly ear-marked and targeted for attack by fanatics, who were operating in a strategic way.

Several house churches have been prevented from holding prayer gatherings, which is part of an ever-widening nationwide operation targeting unofficial “house churches” across India.

Freedom of religion in India is a fundamental right guaranteed by Article 25-28 of the Constitution of India. Every citizen of India has a right to practice and promote their religion peacefully.
