IMPORTANT UPDATE:  26 June, 2018, 10:10 am

Church, please pray for the release of Pastor Deepak Kumar who’s Bail hearing is scheduled for 28 June, 2015.

Pray for Pastor Deepak’s release and acquittal

Pastor Deepak has been in and out of Police custody since 05th of June. Whenever the Police try to release him, a mob of religious fundamentalists, camped outside the Police Station and the Court, protest vehemently, demanding that Pastor be arrested & charged with more stringent and unbailable offenses.

Pastor Deepak ministers at AG Church Mahoba, since 2014, affiliated with Assemblies of God (AG) in Mahoba, a district in Uttar Pradesh.

One of the Church member has accused Pastor of selling her to a Phoolchand from Punjab for Rupees 1 Lakh and also accused Pastor of offering them 2 lakhs, for converting to Christianity. The complainant Varsha along with her family – her mother, 5 sisters and 3 brothers, have been members of the Church for past 4 years. Each one of them were involved in some ministry of the Church – from worship, ushering etc.

Excerpts from the FIR No: 0337, dated 05 June 2018, lodged basis Varsha’s account:

“Varsha was married to Phoolchand from Ludhiana, Punjab on 08 August 2017, in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh. This marriage was arranged by the Local Pastor of Phoolchand, who was known to Varsha.

After the marriage Varsha left with Phoolchand to Ludhiana, Punjab. After around 3-4 months, her husband Phoolchand, told her that she was not just married to him but that he had purchased her from Pastor Deepak for Rupees 1 Lakh. Deeply troubled by what her husband told her, she informed her family in Mahoba, who questioned Pastor Deepak, but claims, did not get a straight-forward response.

Varsha is now pregnant and has paid Rs. 50,000/-, a gold chain and ring to Phoolchand, who used to physically assault her demanding for a larger dowry, and Pastor Deepak taking Rs. 1 Lakh from Phoolchand, has made her feel exploited and manipulated.

Varsha left Ludhiana to meet with Pastor Deepak in Mahoba, who instead of sympathizing with her, allegedly threatened and abused her. Since both Pastor Deepak and Phoolchand have conspired and schemed this situation, which has left her pregnant, she has demanded strict action against both parties.”

On the 05th of June, a team of Police Officers, on the basis of a complaint filed by Varsha, arrested Pastor Deepak and formally charged under the following sections:
IPC 420: Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property
IPC 506: Punishment for criminal intimidation

Phoolchand has not yet surrendered,  as the Police team that went to arrest him, could not establish his whereabouts. He has been charged under the following sections in absentia:
IPC: 3, 4, 323, 504, 506 376, 420, 498 A.

Pastor Deepak spoke to Persecution Relief from police custody.
“I am innocent. This is unbelievable!! All charges that have been levied against me are totally false. Please pray for my acquittal”.

Pastor’s wife, Sis. Sapna, expressed shock and unbelief!
“I cannot believe that Varsha will ever do something like this to us. I have forgiven her and I pray that she realizes what she has done is wrong”. She also added that “The whole town is speaking about us and we feel unfairly vilified by the people”.

The next hearing at the Sessions Court has been scheduled for the 20th of June
Jesus has commanded us to “practice justice, mercy and faithfulness” (Matthew 23:23).

Church, if any of you, live in or around the area in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, we encourage you to visit the Court on 20/6/18,  to express solidarity with Pastor Deepak and his family, who are isolated against a mob of ravaging religious fundamentalists. Your presence would certainly encourage the Pastors family, who are being falsely charged.

Church, please pray that God who hates injustice will bring deliverance.

“He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD. (Proverbs 17:15)

Church pray for the truth to prevail and pray for Pastor Deepak family.
