Power cuts, beatings and ostracization of Christian family, Bihar
Bro. Krishna Kumar Suman called Persecution Relief, sounding very distraught, seeking counsel and direction. His family who are Harijans, live in the village of Maheshpur in District Bhagalpur, where all of the villagers are also Harijans.
Bro. Krishna Kumar and his brother, had a life changing encounter with Jesus Christ, while in college. Seeing the remarkable transformation of their lives impacted by Jesus Christ, in 2010, their father, Bro. Rajkumar Das and the entire family, committed their lives to Christ.
So inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, Bro. Rajkumar started a small House Church at his residence, which was unusual in the village.
Over a year ago, in spite of being aware that Bro. Rajkumar was a Christian, some of the local villagers approached him asking for an offering for Durga puja. They demanded an offering of Rs. 3,000/-.
Bro. Rajkumar politely refused to give an offering, telling them that he was a Christian and that they don’t celebrate Durga puja. Upset and feeling offended by the incident, the local villagers began harassing the family.
The harassment escalated day by day. The fanatics disconnected the power to the house and even blocked off the access roads to the house. On several occasions, the family members were ambushed and beaten by the fanatics.
Speaking to Persecution Relief, Bro. Krishna Kumar was in tears, extremely worried about his parent’s safety, as he works and lives in Mumbai. More than a couple of complaints had been lodged with Sanhauli Police Station. However, no action has been taken so far.
Based on Bro. Krishna Kumar’s request, Persecution Relief’s PRO, Minakshi Singh, spoke to the Station In-charge, highlighting the ostracization and discrimination this Christian family were facing on a daily basis.
On Tuesday, 27th August 2019, Bro. Rajkumar’s family were summoned to Sanhauli Police Station, where a formal complaint was registered and the Officers assured them that firm action would be taken against the perpetrators harassing the family.
Church, please pray for the protection of Bro. Rajkumar Das’s family and members of the House Church. Pray that his faith will not fail due to this discrimination but stand steadfast through his terrifying ordeal.
In Bihar, the scale of “crack down” against the Christian minority community has been unprecedented in the last 2 years.
In 2018, Persecution Relief has recorded 447 incidents of hate-crimes, with 27 cases reported from Bihar, the 3rdmost hostile among the 29 states.
In the first six months of 2019, we have recorded 180 incidents of hate crimes against Christians, with 13 incidents from Bihar alone.
