Pastor Ramesh house Church raided by Police

Police barge into believers home, cause chaos, create a wreck and seized all the Bibles without producing any order or warrant.

Just a while ago, Persecution Relief spoke to Pastor Ramesh Sagar who lives in a village called Azmgarhpurwa which is located in the Bahraich district of the state of Uttar Pradesh, India.

Pastor Ramesh also runs a House Church at his friend and fellow believer, Rakesh’s house where around 50 Christians gather every Sunday to pray and worship Jesus Christ.

The Church faced no issues since its conception in 2008 and around 50 Christians regularly gathered to pray. But over the past few weeks, police from the Sujauli Police Station have been proving to be a big nuisance to the Christian community in that village.

On 10/01/19, a Police Jeep with around 3 Policemen and 2 lady constables and no warrant or order, barged into the Christian household of Mitlesh & Roshan who are a part of Pastor Ramesh’s Church. Absolutely helpless, Mitlesh and Roshan watched in shock as the guardians of the law forced their way into the bedroom and opened all the cupboards and safes, creating mayhem and took every Bible that they could find. They caused complete chaos inside the house, all this while threatening and verbally abusing the Christians. The Police then ordered Mitlesh and Roshan to come to the Police station at 9am sharp, threatening to ‘break their hands and legs’ if they were even 5 minutes late!

The Christians who were still stunned, from the ambush began to realize what this sudden raid was all about. ‘Forsake Jesus Christ’ dictated an unreasonable Policeman on his way out, an instruction that contradicts the right of religious freedom in India.

In less than a couple of days, on 12/01/20, around 5 Policemen composed of 3 constables, namely Hemant, Premsingh, Jainarayan and 2 lady constables, drove up to Rakesh’s home  while the  Sunday worship service was in progress in a red SUV with the number plate UP 40 J 4601.  They disrupted the prayer meeting by hurling insults at the Christians and grabbed all the Bibles that they could find. “What are you all doing here?” questioned an arrogant policeman. “We are learning together from the Holy Bible, praying and singing to Jesus Christ” came the reply from the Church. “Vacate the place immediately” came and angry response from another policeman. Rakesh, Birju, another believer and a few others were called to the Police station without any reason given, on 14/01/20. Once again, they were threatened in the same manner by the policeman “come at 9am and if you reach even 5 minutes late, we will break your legs and hands.”

Pastor Ramesh has made a complaint with the Chief Ministers office since the police themselves are the ones who are operating as extended hands of the religious fanatics. In the Bahraich district, many Christian households have been raided by Police in the recent past, including that of Rahul Kumar as we previously reported .

For the past 3 consecutive years, Uttar Pradesh has ranked #1 in terms of hate crimes against Christians. This does not come as a surprise, knowing that the behaviour of the police, who often misuse and abuse their authority, is worse than that of the religious fanatics in the state. The police may continue to persecute and harass Christians but the administration is unaware, that our Lord neither slumbers nor sleeps, he is keeping a watch over everything.

Pastor Nigel who personally mentors Pastor Ramesh, later updated Persecution Relief about this case and has been seeking council regarding its proceedings.

Persecution Relief has recorded 330 incidents of hate crime against Christians in 2016, 440 incidents in 2017, 477 incidents in 2018 and in 2019  we have recorded 523 incidents of Christian Persecution against Christians  in India.

US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) ranked India’s persecution severity at “Tier 2” along with Iraq and Afghanistan. Over the past seven years, India has risen from No. 31 to No. 10 on Open Doors’ World Watch List, ranking just behind Iran in persecution severity.
