The Superintendent of Police
Lakhimpur Kheri District, UP
Sub: Police Protection for Christain Community in Lakhimpur Kheri District.
We wish to bring to your urgent attention, the religious discrimination, prejudice and bigotry, meted out to Christians in Lakhimpur Kheri District. We – 25 Pastors and families, are all permanent residents of your district.
We are writing to inform your good offices, that as commanded in the Bible and as part of our Christian traditions, we gather corporately, for regular, weekly expressions of our thankfulness before God in worship, praying, singing and hearing God’s word. Every Christian reserves Sunday as a special day of worship and rest.
We hold meetings and events, either in church or at other places, which are of great religious significance to us, where, a large number of Christians and other invitees are expected. We gather with our families, extended family members, friends and relatives, we gather peacefully, every Sunday, for prayer and fellowship.
However, in the last several months, violent vigilante groups have disturbed peaceful prayer meetings, vandalized and desecrated churches, physically assaulted and verbally abused worshippers, molested women and beaten children, every time we gather for Sunday worship service. Even prayer meetings, held within the confines of our homes are attacked. Several Churches are forcibly shut down without any reason provided.
In view of these ground realities, these attacks have perpetuated an atmosphere of fear and communal unrest in the district.
Sir, we are peace loving and law-abiding citizens, living and influencing the community to live upright lives, as per Jesus Christ teachings. We do not involve involve ourselves in any protest, demonstration or campaigns.
It is alleged that the attacks are carried out by the cadre of religious organisations like Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and its allies, who attack us with impunity and disrespect.
Recently, Pastor Anil Kumar and family who lives in Lakhimpur Kheri, were attacked by religious fanatics, and had to run away to save their lives, like criminals.
The State Administration is duty bound to protect its citizens irrespective of religion, caste or creed, from unruly elements and perpetrators of orchestrated lynching and vigilantism.
Therefore, we – 25 Pastors from Lakhimpur Kheri, together submit this petition to you, appealing to you, to safeguard the Christian minority community and our Fundamental Rights under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.
We humbly request you to provide effective police protection to the Christian community and as and when we gather in churches and places of worship.
