Pastor detained by Police, forced to abandon Ministry,Uttar Pradesh
Suptd.Pastor Shaji Varghese who serves the Assemblies of God Church called Persecution Relief to inform us about Pastor John Oommen who was taken to the Police station.
Pastor John Oommen is the local Pastor who ministers in Buladshahar, a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
On Sunday the 8/12/19, around 30 people had gathered at the residence of a Christian Brother named Naresh. Pastor John was just about to read Psalm 14 during the time of worship when they were suddenly interrupted by 2 policemen and around a dozen religious fanatics.
They intruded the prayer meeting and demanded for it to be stopped immediately under the pretext of the Pastor being involved in religious conversion.
The police asked the Pastor to accompany them to the Nerora Police station where they detained him for questioning.
After a while our PRO for Persecution Relief Minakshi spoke and reasoned out with the local Police officers. By evening, Pastor John was released but sadly, only after promising that he would never enter the village of Nerora again.
In the recent past we have witnessed a lot of cases where the police and religious fanatics together have falsely accused Christians of religious conversion, detained them and then release them under conditions that cost them their ministries.
This is a subtle tactic to supress the spread of the Gospel in India. Since you are reading this story, do take some time to pray for the 8 states that have adopted the Anti-conversion Law i.e. Odisha, Himachal Pradesh , Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat.
Persecution Relief has recorded 330 incidents of hate crime against Christians in 2016, 440 incidents in 2017, 477 incidents in 2018 and till September 2019 we have recorded 349 incidents of Christian Persecution against Christians in India.
