Pastor K P Thomas has been ministering for the last 17 years, in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu. Around 20 families gather at Agape Pentecostal Assembly Church to worship every Sunday.
From 10th to the 14th of January, the Church held their Annual Convention. Immediately after this event, the Church has been on the radar of religious fundamentalists.
First, SI (Sub-Inspector) Manikandan from Ambalamulla Police Station paid them a visit stating that a complaint was lodged about the loud volume output of the worship service, which the Church took cognizance of, although surprised at the accusation.
Subsequently, he followed up his visit alleging that they had received a complaint that the Church was involved in conversion activities of tribals and Hindus, which the Church firmly denied.
Lastly, the Police paid the Church a visit on the 19th and wanted to take the Pastor in remand, stating that it was unlawful to have a Church building and a Parsonage adjacent to each other. After Pastor clarified his point the police left.
Pastor Thomas called Persecution Relief on the Toll-Free Number at 1800-1234-461 to advise on the developments. Persecution Relief Team spoke with the local Police and through SYNOD Officials, local Church Leaders were immediately dispatched to the area, to stand alongside pastor Thomas and family.
