Pastor and mother harassed by Police Inspector in the Police Station, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

Pastor Paul Joshua started “Jesus Reigns Church”, 3 months ago, at a rented place, located at Anna Nagar, Near Sunny Side Apartments, 60 ft Road, in Peelamedu, an eastern suburb of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu. Over 25 Christians congregate every Sunday to worship.

On Sunday, 13th May, worship service had commenced at 8.00 am and hastily concluded at 10.30 am, as they notice 3 Police men waiting outside. When Pastor enquired with the Police, he was asked to go to E2 Police Station to meet with the Police Inspector.

Unsure why he was being summoned, Pastor along with his mother Sis. Jasintha Florence (53 years old) and two other Christian brothers, went to the Police Station.

At the Police Station, the Inspector Selva Raj was most ill-mannered and very insulting to them. Pastor alleged police high-handedness as they accused him of being involved in conversion activities, without any investigation. Pastor denied the allegations. Pastor expressed shock and pain over the unprovoked rude behavior and vulgar language used by the Police authorities, especially Inspector Selva Raj.

Speaking to Persecution Relief, Pastor mentioned that Inspector Selva Raj, made him, his mother and the 2 accompanying brothers, sit on the floor of the Station like common criminals. Sis Jacintha told the Inspector that she wanted to leave for home as she had not informed her husband of her whereabouts. As Sis. Florence Jacintha got up to leave, they pulled her by her arm, physically assaulted and twisted her arm behind her back and pushed down to the ground.

The shock and brutality of the assault left her unconscious. While Pastor requested for some water to revive his mother, the Inspector bluntly refused.

He said, “Nobody will lift her up. Don’t give any help to these people”

When Pastor humbly asked the Inspector why he was treating them in this manner, the Inspector responded – ‘I am the boss here. You have no rights to ask me or question me”.

Eventually, Police refused to let them go without giving a written undertaking that they will never again congregate to worship.  As Pastor was forced to give a written undertaking, he wrote that that he would get the necessary permissions before congregating to worship again.

It is alleged that the Police are harassing and infringing upon the fundamental rights of the citizens of this nation, at the behest of some vested interests.

Church, please lift up Pastor Joshua and his family and the congregation members in your prayers.

Please also pray for Inspector Selva Raj and all the Police officials at E2 Police Station, Peelamedu, Coimbatore, that God would have mercy upon them, touch them and change them.

  1. Modi’s secular government is seen. What is the president, a rubber stamp of the party doing. But one thing is sure my lord will repay them.
