“Gideon’s Holy Bible” stall attacked, Uttar Pradesh
Several Christian business men and their wives – are dedicated to making the Word of God available to everyone, together with the local Church, reaching souls for Christ.
At the Pustak Mela held at Agra College Grounds from 18th to 27th of February, the Agra Chapter of Gideons had set up a stall for the distribution of Gideon’s New Testament Bibles, for a cost of Rs. 1000/- per day.
Last week, during this event, on the 22nd, the Camp President Bro. Charles and Treasures Bro. Peter Thomas, had brought a fresh consignment of New Testament Holy Bibles and dropped them off at the stall. Bro. Abhishek, a young, passionate 21-year old Christian, was manning the counter.
Speaking to Persecution Relief, he recalls seeing a mob of youth visiting a neighbouring stall – ‘Gayathri Parivar Mathura Mission’. Soon, they were headed to the Gideon’s Stall.
The group of fanatics confronted him and asked him to stop the distribution of Bibles, alleging him of trying to convert people. When they learnt that the Bibles were being given freely, without any cost, they demanded that they be given the Bibles so that they could also distribute them to the visitors.
Bro. Abhishek, tried hard to assure the extremists that it was his fundamental right given by the Constitution of India and that distributing the Bibles free was not a crime.
During this encounter, he was verbally assaulted him, using profane and vulgar language. Terrorized and frightened by the attack, Bro. Abhishek was overwhelmed by the rowdy mob, who confiscated the Holy Bible’s that were displayed on the Counter, including 3 cartons that were delivered just a few minutes ago.
The fanatics seized the Holy Bibles and loaded them on to their personal vehicle. They warned Bro. Abhishek not to use his phone or alert anyone about this incident for the next 10 minutes, until they had left the venue. They warned him that they would return to kill him if he did not heed to their warning.
In today’s context, the Holy Bible and the newspaper is plain and clear – that to be an outspoken, evangelistic, socially engaged Christian is going to be increasingly dangerous. It may be at the risk of ostracization, physical violence, molestation, false accusations, misunderstanding, denied promotions etc.
Multitudes of lives have been transformed from the timely ‘intervention’ of a Gideon New Testament Holy Bible, at a Prison or a Hospital Bed, from utter hopelessness and from the brink of suicide.
The first few pages of the Gideon Bible reads as below:
“The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its history is true, and its decisions are immutable. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end.”
May the presence and the peace of God, touch the fanatics who have impounded the Holy Bibles, as they read the life-giving words in them and experience the love of Jesus Christ.
In light of these circumstances, Church, let us join the members of Gideons across India, who are on their knees in prayer, as they know that the Lord is still in control of the Event.
In Uttar Pradesh, the scale of “crack down” against the Christian minority community has been unprecedented, with tighter surveillance of churches and on those who continue to worship a western God, Jesus Christ. Uttar Pradesh continues to be a safe haven for the religious fanatics as they work in collusion with the Police and Administration.
Persecution Relief has recorded more than 477 incidents of persecution in 2018, with 129 in Uttar Pradesh, the most hostile among 29 states.Across India, the doors of a multitude of Churches have been sealed and scores arrested on false charges of indulging in conversion activities.
Church, continue to fast and pray for Uttar Pradesh and for India.
