Fanatics refuse water to Christian Woman and children, Karnataka.

It is always alarming when calls are received on the Persecution Relief Toll Free Number 1800-1234-461, knowing that there may be a Christian in distress at the other end of the line.

We received one such call on the 18/03/20. Lokesh made a desperate call to Persecution Relief, asking us to help his mother and 2 nieces aged 6 and 4 respectively, who are being harassed by religious fanatics for their faith in Jesus Christ. Lokesh lives and works in Mangalore while Lakshmma- his mother, lives with his 2 nieces, i.e. the 2 daughters of Lokesh’s brother-Annappa. The 3 of them live in a village at in the District of Chitradurga, in the Indian state of Karnataka. Lokesh’s brother and his wife, also work in Mangalore to earn their livelihood.

Lokesh has been a faithful follower of Jesus Christ for the past 6 years. However, his mother- Lakshmma accepted Christ a few months back. She regularly attends a Church that gathers in a nearby village which is lead by Pastor Raju.

A while back, a few people came to Lakshmma’s home to collect money for one of Karnataka’s  biggest festivals- ‘Sirsi Marikamba Jatra’ which begins on March 22nd and goes on until March 30th. Lakshmma, who didn’t want any trouble, made a contribution of Rs 1000 (14$), to the organizers, after which the left. There was a program that was planned before the commencement of the festival, Lakshamma, knowing that it was against her beliefs, did not participate in the program. This angered the organizers of the program. They gathered together as a group and made their way to Lakshamma’s home. Confronting her they said, “ take your money back if you can’t attend the meeting.” They then accused her of her behaviour on account of becoming a Christian. They tried their best to force her to attend the program but Lakshmma refused. Realizing that she was not going to change her mind, the religious fanatics were filled with rage and created a chaos at her home. They then decided and made it known amongst the rest of the villagers that she would not be allowed to use water from the tap which is in front of her house.

A distressed Lakshamma informed her son Lokesh about her ordeal. He in turn, immediately called the Persecution Relief Toll free number and spoke to us along with his local Pastor Jacob John. They are planning to go to the village immediately and have requested our prayers. Lokesh and his brother Annappa are very concerned about their mother and the 2 little children.

Across India, many families and individuals are facing similar situations. The trauma of being boycotted on account of ones faith is indescribable. Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ succumb to these threats out of fear of losing their homes, inheritance, access to water, food, electricity etc. We as the Church of God need to fast and pray for these excommunicated Christians.

Pray that Lakshamma and her grand daughters would have uninterrupted access to water. Pray that they would not be harassed by the religious fanatics and villagers. Also pray that God would miraculously touch the hardened hearts of the religious fanatics and draw them unto him. That they and their households would have a change of heart and accept Jesus as the only true and living God.

Psalm 68:5- ‘A Father of the fatherless, a defender of the widows, is God in His Holy habitation.’ The loneliest people in the world today are Children who live without their families, people who have lost their spouses etc. God intended the family to be a safe place, even thought this doesn’t always happen. Sadly people are left alone or they die. But God sees this and fills the gap. It is He who looks after us and meets all our need, even in the most difficult times.
