Christian families beaten because ‘village gods’ ran away

Christians families brutally beaten

By Persecution Relief Correspondent

Missionaries Pr. Somangal D Samad and his wife Sis. Meena are ministering in Mayurbsanj village in district Rairangtur of Odisha. They are affiliated to Indian Evangelical Mission. They have been shepherding 5 families living at Kendupura, Dhenkanal district of Odisha which is around 170 Km’s away.

Sis. Meena, speaking to the Founder, Persecution Relief, stated that on 27th of February, members of 5 Christian families were beaten up from 5 pm to 11 pm, by local religious fanatics in the village. The radicals allegedly claim that since they belong to the Christian faith and believe in Jesus Christ, their own gods and devata’s have “run away” from the village.

Thus, says the Lord: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s’.  The battle belongs to the Lord and the devil will flee seven ways.

The belivers who were beaten up are Bro. Rengo Kulda and his wife Sis. Dusama, Bro. Uschaba & his wife Sis. Malti, Bro. Raju, Bro. Pandu’s mother & Bro. Santa. In spite of the persecution and ostracization by the villagers, members of the 5 families are firm and steadfast in their commitment to Jesus Christ. Pray that they may continue to stand as God’s battle-axe and weapons of war.

They have been excommunicated and expelled from the village and are currently staying in the neighboring village with one Christian relative, who is a widow and very poor. May God bless this widow who is in need of receiving charity herself, yet has the heart to share her little, in faith that God could use it.

“The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself” – Prov. 11:25

Persecution Relief  has provided financial relief to the injured to meet immediate medical expenses.

Odisha has remained an unsafe place for Christians, even with the passage of time. Odisha had seen the senseless burning of Graham Staines and his 2 sons, who came to India from Australia in 1965, and became involved in the Leprosy Mission work of treating lepers in Daripada, Odisha.

“Kandhamal” is another single word that best captures the whole story of anti-Christian persecution in Odisha.  Seven innocent Christians from remote Kandhamal district in Odisha state of India are still languishing in jail following the mysterious murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati on August 23, 2008. These innocent Christians – six of them illiterates including a mentally challenged – were convicted in 2013 for the murder touted as a Christian conspiracy. Bro. Anto Akkara a Christian activist is also fighting for justice for these 7 Pastors in jail.

Persecution Relief has taken the commitment and responsibility and adopted the neglected wives and households of these seven Christians, providing monthly livelihood support.

“The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man; He shall stir up His zeal like a man of war. He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud; He shall prevail against His enemies” (Isaiah 42:13).
