Madurai: A complaint has been registered against two people for instigating communal unrest between Christian and Hindu members of the Kattunaicker community. The federation against religious communalism has demanded their arrest without further delay.
Police said the tension in the nomadic tribe residing at Sathyamoorthy Nagar, Madurai was instigated by Hindus who did not belong to their village or their community. In all, 30 members of this community had embraced Christianity about 30 years ago and they had been living in harmony with the Hindu community members. That was till Hindu Munnani members came to their village in 2017 and hoisted their flag in front of the local temple.

In her complaint, R Alagumeenakshi has said that she belongs to the Kattunaicker community and is a Christian. There were 500 families of Kattunaicker community living in Sathyamoorthy Nagar of which about 100 had converted to Christianity. N S Mani of Umatchikulam, from the Ahamudiar community, had declared himself to be the leader of their community, and had been conducting kangaroo courts and unleashing atrocities on them. Though many complaints had been given against him at the Samayanallur police station, no action was taken. Mani had asked the men and women from 30 Christian families, who he had ostracised, to fall at his feet as well as those of others in the village as punishment.
Hence, Alagumeenakshi called for action against N S Mani and another Hindu Munnani member, Thangam Venketesh, who had passed a resolution at the village council saying they would eradicate the 30 Christian families from the village. Samayanallur police have registered cases against N S Mani and Thangam Venkatesh under various sections of IPC as well as SC/ST Act.
