Brethren believers manhandled, West Bengal

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. – Matt 29: 18-20

The Great Commission” doesn’t belong to any particular era; rather, all churches at all times and in all places must endeavor together in making disciples of all nations.

Evangelist Achintya Ghosh, is affiliated to Jhanjra Brethren Church, at Ukhra Town, in Paschim Bardhaman District, which is predominantly an urban mining-industrial district, in West Bengal.

Evangelist Ghosh leads a group of men, challenging them not only with exhortation but also setting an example through his personal evangelism, taking great confidence in the gospel, to spread the message of the gospel – “for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Rom. 1:16)

Seeking the guidance from God, this group of ordinary believers, decided to step out in faith, to distribute Bible Tracts, the New Testament and a book on the Gospel of John, and share their faith to those whom they meet. They determined to do this from the 05th to 18th March 2018, the weeks before Good Friday and Easter, as they desired to invite people for Easter service and proclaim the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ, His death and His resurrection, and how mankind can be saved from sin.

On the 1st day, 05th March, the distribution of tracts went on peacefully and passers-by readily received them. The brothers would engage them in a conversation and share the gospel. People readily offered Rs. 2/- to buy the booklet on the Gospel of John.

On the 2nd day, 06th of March, tracts were again distributed throughout the morning. Resting for a while in the afternoon, they resumed distribution at 5:30 pm, getting the same response from the public.

Unexpectedly, 2 tall, dark complexioned teenagers, armed with bamboo lathis, confronted the group, disrupting their tract distribution. Accusing them of indulging in conversion activities, they threatened the group of dire consequences. According to reports, they stated that they belonged to the RSS Group and demanded that they stop the distribution of tracts immediately. They physically accosted the brothers and pushed a Bro. Sam Biswas on to the street, in the busy market place. As the raised their bamboo lathis to beat Bro. Biswas, Evg. Achintya immediately planted himself between both of them. He questioned them as to why they wanted to beat Bro. Biswas or anyone for that matter?

They responded that Christians were taking foreign money to distribute Christian books in order to convert people. The Evangelist patiently explained that no one can be forced to become a Christian and that it is only through Jesus Christ that lives are transformed. The Evangelist went on to say that RSS people will never do something like what you are doing.

Soon, a large crowd gathered and several people began relating their experience in support of the Evangelist and the group. They stated that they were blessed by reading the tracts and explained that there was no compulsion to take the tracts if they found it offensive. Eventually, the members of the public escorted the brothers to their motor bikes and send them away safely.

“The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. – Psalm 34:7

Speaking to the Founder, Persecution Relief, Evangelist Achintya Ghosh passionately stated that:
“I will never stop distributing God’s word even if I have to lay down my life. I came to this city 29 years ago and since then I had been praying for this city. I love my city and the people of this city and will continue to share the love of Jesus Christ to everyone in the city”.

Church, each one of us must consider the Lord’s commands and must seek the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit as we step out in faith. We have been given no greater gift than the gospel, and we have no greater stewardship than to share that message of good news with others “for the love of Christ compels us”.

Jesus Christ rules all things, earthly and heavenly, and He is with us to the end of the age. He will complete His mission.

Church, please continue to pray for Evangelist Ghosh and his team, for every Christian, Evangelist, Pastor, Preacher – to be bold, courageous and obedient, to continue be an effective witness for Christ in both word and deed.
