Bloodthirsty Hooliganism and intimidation by religious fanatics, Bihar

Sunday Worship Service was disrupted by religious fanatics on 11th November, when a mob of around 2 dozen men, unlawfully assembled and shouted slogans, outside the Church, as religious fanatics of Bihar continues its crackdown on Christians.

Pastor Christopher Bhonsle has been ministering with Mahanaim Church in Begusarai District, Bihar, for several years.

A congregation of around 80 members had already assembled inside the Church building and the Worship service had begun. In what appears to be a pre-meditated attack by members of the hard-line right wing religious fanatics, they arrived armed with horn speakers, microphones and floor mats, which they spread outside the Church and sat on the floor, facing the entrance of the Church.

Shouting slogans of ‘jai sri ram’ and anti-Christian slogans, they demanded that the meeting be stopped. They also shouted slogans against Pastor Christopher, threatening to hang him.

In spite of the Police rushing to the spot, the angry brazen thugs who have become increasingly violent, continued their chants with impunity, in broad daylight, demanding that Pastor Christopher be hanged!! They threatened the authorities and boasted that they were not afraid to shed blood, if their demands were not met.

“Rivers of blood will flow in this place” they threatened.

While Pastor protested the attack to the Police by fundamentalists, the Police were simply derelict in their duties and demanded that he give them a written undertaking that he would not conduct prayer meetings in the further.

The Constitution of India guarantees freedom of religion in India, which is a fundamental right guaranteed by Article 25-28 of the Constitution. Every citizen of India has a right to practice and promote their religion peacefully.

Pastor Christopher Bhonsle has been facing consistent persecution from fanatics for a very long time.

“Even the previous, the Sunday meeting was forcibly stopped”, said Pastor.

Last year, in March 2017, the Police were summoned due to a disturbance, but they demanded that Pastor stop conducting meetings.

Speaking to Persecution Relief, Pastor expressed outrage at the incident.

I have no words to express what happened this morning. In all my 35 years of ministry, I have never faced such a hostile situation like this.

“Because of the loud speakers, we could not share the Word but just rejoiced in the Lord singing a few songs and closed the meeting”, he added.

Several house churches have been prevented from holding prayer gatherings, which is part of an ever-widening nationwide operation targeting unofficial “house churches” across India.

Church, pray for Pastor Christopher, his family and the congregation, that they would respond in love to their persecutors.

Pray that the persecutors would be transformed from Saul to Paul, that they would come to know the love of Jesus Christ.
