BHOPAL: A Bhopal resident was booked under Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion law for allegedly hiding his religion and pressuring his wife to convert to Christianity along with their newborn baby.

In her complaint, the 26-year-old woman has said that her husband posed as a Hindu when they met in April 2020. “The accused lured her into his trap through friendship. After three to four months, when she became pregnant, she asked him to keep his promise. He allegedly refused and tried to pressure her into an abortion but she refused. He then revealed that he was a Christian,” said the investigating officer, SI Ramesh Singh. He tried to pressure her to convert but she continued to resist, said Singh. The accused and his sister then agreed to the marriage without conversion and the wedding took place in January at Arya Samaj.

The woman delivered a child on March 19, and the very next day, when she was still in hospital, her husband and his family members began pressuring her to give them the child for conversion, says the complaint. She again refused.

“Since then, the woman has been living with her parents. On her complaint, a case under sections 3 and 5 of Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Ordinance, 2020, was registered at Koh-e-Fiza police station on August 2. Our investigation is on,” added SI Singh. The accused was yet to be arrested till Friday night.
