Bro. Asharam, his wife and 3 children are residents of Javanga village in Geedam Tehsil, Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh State. He has been a believer of Jesus Christ since 2006 and attends Bethel Prarthana Samiti Church. He is Tailor by profession.
Today, 03 January 2018, while he was busy with his work, a few people from the village came to his house and asked him to accompany them. When he enquired the reason, they pretended that they just wanted to talk to him. As soon as they got him into an open space, they started slapping, kicking and brutally beating him. The physical assault has left him bleeding that he had to be rushed to the nearby hospital and provided treatment.
The fundamentalists have threatened him with serious consequences if he does not stop going to Church.
“They said, ‘Don’t stay here – get out of this area, or we will burn your family alive and your house down,’” Bro. Asharam said.
Bro. Asharam said the village Sarpanch, ironically joined the religious fundamentalists and physically attacked him.
Fearing for the safety and further reprisal from these radicals, Bro. Asharam decided to leave the village. He has left his ancestral property and all that he has been familiar with, just to avoid further escalation of this situation. He and his family are currently staying at Pastor Jaggo Nag’s house which is around 7 kms away.
The ordeal did not end there. Bro. Asharam and Pastor Jaggo Nag decided to go to the Geedam Police Station, with an application summarizing the traumatic evening. But the Police Officer on duty, on reading the application, refused to accept the application.
He said, “Since this is a religious issue, I will not take your application”.
The Police Officer did not accept the application nor file a First Information Report (FIR), further threatening the duo with added punishment and beating if they pursued the matter. Already wounded and scared with the unprovoked attack, both Pastor & Bro. Asharam left the Police Station.
Speaking to Persecution Relief Correspondent, Pastor & Bro. Asharam were clearly shaken up with the turn of events.
