Press Release from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) on the attack of four Religious Sisters belonging to the Congregation of the Sacred Heart Society.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) is deeply saddened and shocked by the attack of four Religious Sisters belonging to the Congregation of the Sacred Heart Society last Friday as they were travelling from Delhi to Odisha. Such incidents surely bring dishonour and shame to all of us, the law-abiding citizens of our beloved Mother India.
It is distressing that the four religious sisters were accused of unfounded allegations by some fellow travellers without any recourse to law even though the young women informed them that they were Catholics and bona fide citizens of the Indian Republic.
Upon their arrival at the Jhansi railway station the police took them in custody and released them around 11:30 p.m. after a high-ranking police official verified the matter. Subsequently, they were helped by the Jhansi Bishops’ House and the next day the sister’s Provincial Superior arrived from Delhi to facilitate their interrupted journey to Odisha.
The CBCI calls upon all respective Government authorities, Central, State and the Indian Railways, to ensure safety of all women in future. The Catholic church has always stood for good governance and seeks to collaborate always with the government in working for the good of all communities and for the respect of all religions in our beloved country.
Archbishop Felix Machado, Secretary General
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI)
