Arrested for ‘disturbing the peace’, Uttarakhand

On Wednesday, 06th February, Bro. Bachan Singh and his wife, Evangelists Dhas Singh and Kishore, were arrested and charged with “disturbing the peace”.

In Dhanmalchour, a remote village in Nainital, in the state of Uttarakhand, Bro. Bachan Singh, a man of humble beginnings, donated a part of his ancestral property to FMPB (Friends Missionary Prayer Band), a missionary movement of Christian Indians, sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus in the remote corners of India.

Having tasted the gift of salvation, Bro. Bachan Singh and his wife, were not content. Like Apostle Paul, they wanted the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to be carried far and wide in their village, beyond the boundaries of their home, so that everyone could hear the “good news” that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life, for all people.

This piece of land, measuring 25 x 30 ft., was donated so that believers could worship freely. The land was being prepared for the construction of the Church building. Since the work was still in progress, Bro. Bachan Singh and his wife, erected a few poles and wrapped cloth around it, to make a make-shift temporary wall.

Considerate of the neighbourhood and mindful of the residential area, no speakers or instruments were used – just a body of Christians, standing together, praising and worshipping the Living God. However, religious fanatics falsely accused them of disturbing the peace and indulging in conversion activities.

Police were summoned and bro. Bachan Singh and his wife were arrested under Section 504 in the Indian Penal Code

  1. Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace. —Whoever intentionally insults, and thereby gives provocation to any person, intending or knowing it to be likely that such provocation will cause him to break the public peace, or to commit any other offence, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

Bro. Bachan Singh and his wife were released on bail later in the evening. However, Bail application was rejected for Evg. Dhas Singh and Evg. who are still in Police custody.

Church, pray that this Church will continue to stay faithful to Jesus Christ, His Word and the Holy Spirit and keep walking in dominion over all darkness.

Pray that this Church will become a Living and Victorious Church in Jesus Christ.

Uttarakhand joins Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh, as states that have adopted anti-conversion bills, which religious extremists routinely use to falsely accuse Christians of forcible or fraudulent conversion.

Many servants of God work in hostile situations like this across India and it is the responsibility of every Church to pray for these servants of God and for the believers that they may stand strong in their faith and that none should be lost.

In 2018, Persecution Relief recorded 477 incidents of violence against Christians – 8 incidents from Uttarakhand.

Let us be united in one Spirit and stand with the Persecuted Church in India, in an hour like this!
