The world silently watches the proclamation of anti-Christian propaganda of religious radicals in India. The persecution is real in  villages which is unseen to the world. Christians in the North of India are spending sleepless nights praying and hoping “the worst is yet to come” situation will not catch them unawares.

However, the question of ‘What is Christian life in India?’ is something that every disciple of Christ ponders over in this nation. The rising persecution is so horrific and grim that Christians often stand to lose family, property and dignity for not renouncing their faith or living boldly in Christ. Here is a heart-breaking story of a 19-year-old young married woman and a mother of a year and half old daughter.

Belonging to the Santali tribe in Odisha, Sushmita Oni (name changed for security reasons) was married off by her folks at a very young age. Her in-laws hail from Tandajhar village in Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Sushmita, a Hindu by birth, attended church one day, with her aunt; she was seeking solace in God for her marriage which was falling apart with her husband openly indulging in the pleasures of an extra-marital relationship with another married woman from another district.

The adulteress woman as reported by a Christian Sis. Tarunitha Prem(name changed for security reasons) from Rourkela District, also has a daughter. Her continual pressure on Sushmita’s husband to divorce Sushmita saw her suffer humiliation, physical and emotional wounds at the hands of her husband and in laws. Unable to bear the burden of suffering alone with a little daughter to take care of, Sushmita, called up her aunt asking to be taken to church. Her in-laws were not aware of it. After attending church and having asked for prayers for the restoration of her marriage, Sushmita felt a deep peace in her heart. Though she did not attend church after that as her in-laws got suspicious about the sudden change in her, Sushmita secretly became a believer and joined prayer meets telephonically with Sis Tarunitha.

Sushmita has been a secret believer for over a year now. However, her secret life as a believer could not be hidden for long under the prying eyes of her in-laws. The moment they learnt of her change in faith, they ostracized her from their religious rituals, demanding the ritual money to be paid back to them and decided to annul her marriage with their son. The worst moment dawned on her when she was told she would not have the custody of her one and half year old daughter. Worse still, her mobile was snatched away from her which meant no contact with anybody she knew. Her in-laws called her brother up to expedite the divorce proceedings. Since the last 15 days she has been staying at her sister’s place and continues to keep in touch with Sis Tarunitha.

As Sis Tarunitha reported to Persecution Relief, Sushmita weeps for her child daily and is ready to fight for her custody. She desires to live out her Christian life openly but at the same time save her marriage despite living a life of nightmares with her in-laws. Persecution Relief stands with Sushmita during her time of despair and unites in prayer for restoration and God’s peace to invade the life of this young mother whose heart yearns for her little daughter. Just 19, this young mother, ostracized for following Christ, needs your support in prayers. Sushmita is just one of many women who face not only religious discrimination but physical, mental and emotional torture yet cling on to Jesus Christ and His unconditional love for them.

Through this storm of unprecedented rise in persecution in India, Persecution Relief poses the most avoided and ignored question to the Body of Christ – “How well prepared is the church in remaining steadfast in Christ during this time of persecution?” We bring to remembrance this question of Jesus Christ to his disciples in Luke 18:8 – “  …Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” It is high time the church puts aside differences of opinions, denominations, mindsets, traditions and religiosity to come together, remain stimulated more in prayer and work towards building and growing the church.

Please pray for God’s intervention and justice to prevail in Sushmita’s life. That our loving God will cause by His Spirit to break the hardened hearts of her in-laws and give them a heart of flesh.

Please pray that Sushmita’s husband will come to repentance and reconcile with her. Please pray for the entire family to come to the saving knowledge of Christ and live peacefully in togetherness to serve Him.

Please pray for Sushmita’s little child who is caught in the midst of such turmoil caused by the enemy and that her parents will reconcile and live in the love of Christ.
