19 Christians detained for distributing tracts in Karnataka

19 Members on a Mission Trip from Goa to Karwar in Karnataka, were detained by the Police for distributing Christian tracts on the public roads of Karwar.

Pastor Moses Aghamkar who leads “Church of Living Water” in Vasco, Goa, along with team members, were handing out Bible tracts and brochures, proclaiming repentance and forgiveness in Christ, on Saturday, 25 May 2019, when they were apprehended by the Karwar Police. No one was forced to take a tract.

While there is no law in India forbidding the distribution of religious material, the Christians were taken to Karwar Police Station and detained for over 5 hours for interrogation.

Article 25 of Indian Constitution grants freedom to every citizen of India to profess, practice and propagate his own religion. The constitution, in the preamble professes to secure to all its citizen’s liberty of belief, faith and worship.

Speaking to Persecution Relief, Pastor mentioned that by the grace of God, just before the Police could confiscate their mobile phones, he was able to inform his contacts about his detention. Pastor Moses and his team members were released from Police custody in the evening.

However, Police detained their Goa-registered motor bikes because they were ‘modified’ and did not adhere to the specifications of Karnataka Motor vehicles. Pastor have asked Pastor to come back to Karwar next week, to reclaim the motor bikes.

For Christians alone, last year Persecution Relief documented 477 hate-crimes against churches and individuals.  Hate crimes, social boycotts, assaults, and forced conversion [to Hinduism] have escalated dramatically in the past 5 years.

In 2019, we have recorded 157 incidents in just the first 4 months of this year.
