11 booked for coercing people to convert religion in Madhya Pradesh
INDORE: Bhanwarkuan police on Tuesday registered a case against 11 people for coercing people to convert their religion at Satyaprakashan Sanchar centre in Indrapuri area.
Shalini Kaushal, a complainant, told police that her parents Rakesh and Rani Kaushal took her to Satyaprakashan Sanchar centre while claiming that they were taking her to her grandmother’s place. She added that some people thrashed her and forcefully made her attend a prayer meet.
“There were other male and female members who were being forced to listen to the Christian organizers and were not allowed to leave the spot,” she told police in her complaint.
Acting on the information, Bhanwarkuan police registered a case against 11 people under Section 3 and 4 of Freedom of Religion Act 2020 and have arrested six people.
It also came to fore that members of a right wing outfit also reached the spot and videos of them vandalizing the property went viral on social media. ASP Rajesh Vyas, however, denied any such incident. “Police officials were present on the spot and nothing was vandalized,” he said.
Father Babu Joseph, director of Satyaprakashan Sanchar Kendra said, “Our institution caters to diverse groups including Hindus and Muslims whoever requires space. We have a recording studio, and an auditorium for meetings and training programs.”
Joseph added, “We had given the space for two hours to a group for a meeting. Some people barged in and made allegations that the group was involved in conversion. The incident took place from 12 pm-4 pm. No major damage was done except pulling down some photographs from the walls. Police reached on time and prevented all the violence. The group was raising slogans and using foul language but no physical assault took place.”
