Sushma Swaraj, Shashi Tharoor spar over making Hindi official language at United Nations
NEW DELHI: External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Congress member Shashi Tharoor traded barbs in Lok Sabha on Wednesday over making Hindi an official language at the UN.
After Swaraj asserted that the government was willing to go to any lengths to get Hindi the status of official language in the UN, Tharoor questioned the government’s need to push a language that was spoken by the people of only one country.
Tharoor said, “Hindi is not the national language, it is an official language.” While the PM or foreign minister were free to speak in Hindi and take pride in it if they wanted to, Tharoor said there was no need to impose the language on future leaders who may represent non-Hindi speaking states.
